Overview:

Summit’s two-week summer research program at Columbia University’s New York City campus offers two distinct pathways for students to experience authentic academic inquiry in a world-class university setting.

Through our carefully designed two-tier structure—an individual research track and a group research track— students engage at a level aligned with their academic readiness and interests. Whether they are prepared for a rigorous, one-on-one, publication-oriented project or seeking a structured, collaborative introduction to foundational research skills, each pathway reflects Summit’s commitment to meaningful scholarship and high-quality mentorship.

Students may enroll as boarding or commuter participants, providing flexibility for both local families and those traveling from across the country and abroad.

  • One-on-one mentorship with a Columbia-affiliated faculty member or researcher
  • Individually tailored research topic development, aligned with each student’s academic interests
  • Continuous personalized guidance through each stage of the project
  • Training in forming rigorous research questions and building a strong conceptual framework
  • Support with methodology selection, including qualitative, quantitative, or mixed research approaches
  • Instruction in conducting a scholarly literature review and synthesizing academic sources
  • High-level coaching in analytical thinking, argumentation, and interpreting evidence
  • Guided drafting and revision, with multiple rounds of individualized mentor feedback
  • Development of advanced academic writing skills, including structure, clarity, and scholarly tone

Program Deliverables

Best for Students who:

"Conducting university-level research under Columbia professors was an unparalleled experience. It sharpened my skills and made my college application stand out."
- Yoon L from Korea

Tier 2 - Enhanced Group Research

Students collaborate in small groups of up to five to produce an 8-page foundational research report. Working within a structured, university-modeled curriculum, students are guided by university-affiliated research mentors who teach them how to think, read, and write like emerging scholars. Throughout the program, students develop essential academic skills—including critical reading, analytical reasoning, evidence-based argumentation, effective communication, and structured scholarly writing.

This collaborative track mirrors the way research is conducted in real university labs and academic teams, where ideas are built through discussion, shared analysis, and collective problem-solving. Students learn to evaluate sources together, debate interpretations, divide research tasks, and integrate their findings into a cohesive final report.

Because the program emphasizes both rigor and support, Tier 2 gives students a solid foundation for future academic success. It is especially valuable for students who want to strengthen their research fundamentals before pursuing more advanced, individualized projects, such as Tier 1. By the end of the program, students leave with increased confidence, stronger academic habits, and a clear understanding of what high-level research entails.

  • Work collaboratively in a cohort of up to five students, guided by a university-affiliated research mentor.
  • Produce a polished 8-page group research paper suitable for high school–level journals, conferences, and showcases.
  • Learn collaborative research methods, critical analysis, academic reading, structured writing, and scholarly communication.
  • Receive guidance on submitting work to select high school–level journals, conferences, and research expos.
  • Develop the academic foundation needed for independent research, including readiness for more advanced projects such as Tier 1.
  • Engage in feedback cycles that strengthen writing and analytical skills while exploring interdisciplinary topics before specializing.
