2026 Columbia Summer Research Program Student Highlights

The Summit Institute
This summer, Summit Institute welcomed a group of motivated high school students to its 2026 Summer Research Program held at Columbia University. Over two intensive weeks, students immersed themselves in academic research, developing independent projects while working closely with dedicated research mentors in the heart of New York City.
Each student began with an academic interest and worked to transform it into a focused research project. With individualized mentor guidance, students explored scholarly literature, refined their research questions, developed arguments and analyses, and strengthened their academic writing. As their projects progressed, students learned that research is not simply about finding answers—it is about asking stronger questions, evaluating evidence carefully, and being willing to revise ideas as new perspectives emerge.
The Columbia program extended beyond individual research. Students participated in academic lectures and discussions with scholars and researchers, gaining insight into the research process and learning how ideas are developed and communicated in an academic environment. Students also had opportunities to exchange perspectives with their peers, discuss one another's projects, and become part of a small community centered around intellectual curiosity and discovery.
The program culminated in the Summit Research Symposium, where students presented the projects they had developed throughout the two weeks. Presenting their work challenged students to take complex ideas and communicate them clearly to an audience. They explained their research questions, discussed their findings and arguments, and responded to questions about their work—an important part of becoming a confident researcher and academic communicator.
